June 2013 – ICSS Executive Director Peter van Rooijen was appointed an ‘Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau) at the annual HIV benefit gala AmsterdamDiner. It is bestowed for outstanding service to the community. The royal award was presented to van Rooijen by Lilliane Ploumen, Minister for International Trade and Development Cooperation, in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Mabel. Ploumen called van Rooijen a “pioneer” in the national and international fight against AIDS.
Peter was recognized as a long time advocate and leader in AIDS advocacy organizations. Since 1984, Peter has served on the boards of numerous local and international organizations in the global health field, directed several key organizations, been a key civil society voice since the foundation of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and helped establish and support numerous networks and organizations supporting AIDS advocacy among affected populations.
